Pipe Relining in Sydney CBD: A Heritage Building Restoration Project

Ready Set Reline took on the challenge of relining damaged pipes in a multi-story Heritage Building located in the heart of Sydney CBD. This project not only showcased our expertise in pipe relining but also highlighted our ability to overcome unique challenges presented by historic structures.

Client's Vision

Our client, a large heritage restoration company, approached us with a critical issue: the need to reline approximately 27 metres of badly damaged and leaking cast iron and copper downpipes within a multi-story heritage building.

Their objective was clear – to restore the building’s drainage system to optimal condition while preserving its historical components.

Navigating the Challenges

1. Complex Access

The project presented the first challenge - gaining access to tight spaces within the old building. Navigating the intricate layout required careful planning and execution.

2. Extensive Pipe Damage

Decades of wear and tear had left the existing pipes in a dire state, requiring thorough rehabilitation to ensure long-term functionality.

3. Heritage Preservation

We needed to ensure that all heritage components within the building remained intact and unharmed during the relining process.

4. Pipe Smoothness

To guarantee the success of the relining process, it was essential to ensure that the pipes were perfectly smooth and free from any sharp objects.

Innovative Solutions

Our approach began with a comprehensive assessment, including CCTV camera inspections to identify the extent of the damage. To address these challenges, we executed the following steps:

Descaling

Utilising a Picote machine, we descaled the cast iron pipes, preparing them for the relining process.

Robotic Cutting

A robotic cutter was employed to grind down any screws, bolts, or sharp edges that could potentially puncture the liner, ensuring the long-term integrity of the solution.

Debris Removal

All debris within the pipes was flushed out and removed.

Relining Process

We then inserted CCTV sewer cameras and installed/inverted 27 metres of Brawoliner, using ambient epoxy resin from the 6th floor to the street curb.

Quality Assurance

After completing the relining work, we reinserted the CCTV camera to inspect and test the newly rehabilitated pipe, ensuring it met the highest standards.

Results Achieved

This project was a source of pride for us, as it demonstrated our skills and experience in pipe relining. It also gave us a sense of satisfaction to achieve a great end result for a challenging site location. Our innovative UV pipe relining technology and robotic pipe cutting equipment enable us to handle any pipe repair project in Sydney with confidence.

Looking back on this project, we acknowledge that there’s always room for improvement. If we were to start the project anew, we would explore the use of UV lighting to expedite the process. Additionally, we would proactively prearrange parking permits to streamline logistics in the bustling city.
